Cultural guidelines

Singapore is a multi-ethnic society.

It is a conservative town in many respects and the chewing gum ban is still in effect. Many magazines are “edited” for appropriate content and it is generally accepted that the Government exercises a benevolent influence over the society as a whole.  Smoking is frowned upon and banned in all indoor areas.

Due to the very hot mono climate, business dress in Singapore is a long-sleeved dress shirt and a tie for men and simply comfortable, appropriate attire for women.  Shorts are not considered appropriate attire for business.

Tipping: Many hotels and restaurants add service charge but no gratuity is expected.

If you are invited home, remember to take your shoes off at the door.

Never give clocks to Chinese as the Chinese word for clock sounds similar to the word for coffin.
