Hong Kong
Often described as a place where East meets West, Hong Kong has a deeply ingrained Western culture which coexists seamlessly with its traditional Oriental heritage. As the largest and most robust financial centre in the region it boasts an impressive infrastructure and world class educational facilities.
The Hong Kong economy is sophisticated and well established and attracts major investment from both Asian and global organisations. As with any buoyant commercial market, the need for international legal expertise is an essential part of doing business. The region has become a magnet for both UK and US law firms that recognise the huge potential a presence in Hong Kong can bring to their overall business. With a large number of global corporations and investment banks also headquartered in the City, there are also significant opportunities within the in-house legal market.
There is particular interest in candidates with international experience in corporate, banking, structured finance and capital markets. Projects and energy experience are also occasionally called for, particularly for those with local language skills.
China
As one of the world’s oldest and perhaps most enigmatic civilisations, China has a population of over 1.3 billion and a cultural heritage that has influenced the West immeasurably. In recent years, many parts of the country have undergone somewhat of a cultural and economic makeover and today the major commercial cities of Beijing and Shanghai are almost unrecognisable from what they were a decade ago. Both are vibrant, cosmopolitan cities and, whilst ancient traditions continue to play a part in every day life, the mood is one of optimism and aspiration to become major global financial centres.
With market restrictions relaxed, the Chinese economy continues to grow apace and the demand for legal services is at an all time high. Whilst local language skills are still of particular interest, it is anticipated that the market will quickly open up to a more diverse range of legal expertise. With continued financial investment in the country (and of course the forthcoming Olympic Games) it is unsurprising that the most in demand areas of experience are finance, capital markets, projects, construction, energy and corporate.
Singapore
Singapore has a highly developed economy with growth throughout the last year exceeding expectations. With a population of almost 5 million, it is one of the world’s largest ports and the fourth largest foreign exchange trading centre after London, New York and Tokyo. A modern and efficient city, it also boasts a favourable year round climate and is superbly placed for exploring the wider South-East Asia region.
Having close ties to the Hong Kong and Chinese markets, the demand for both local and international lawyers is centred on corporate, banking and capital markets. Most business is conducted in English and therefore fluency in English is required.
