In-House

If you’re looking to become more commercially involved in a business, Hughes-Castell can help you secure a role as Legal Counsel, General Counsel or Company Secretary.

Working with publicly listed and private companies, Government departments and agencies, Hughes-Castell has been involved in playing an integral role in the appointment of some of Australia’s most talented lawyers across the spectrum of industries.

Often considered to offer a greater work/life balance, other attractions of in-house roles include more commercial exposure and in-depth involvement with the business through close interaction with other divisions of the organisation and external third parties. The variety of work and diversity of the role will usually depend on the size of the company and the structure of the legal department however the salary at all levels is usually commensurate, if not very competitive or exceeding, that of private practice.

You will usually need at least 2 years post admission as companies invariably seek candidates who have sound experience ideally from private practice to carry out what may be an autonomous or largely independent role with minimal supervision. The role usually has strong exposure to various members of the organisation outside of the legal department and third parties including external lawyers and clients. Accordingly, strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to deal with people at all levels would be very highly regarded.

If you are interested in making the transition to an in-house role or a move within the in-house market then our consultants are well positioned to assist you in making it a success.
